Overview

About our partnership

SmartSense (a Digi International division) provides IoT monitoring for high-stakes industries like pharma, logistics, and food retail.

We’ve worked with them since 2019, supporting product development, modernization, and key transitions like M&As.

CONTEXT

Remote monitoring sits inside daily supply chain operations.

SmartSense helps companies monitor environmental conditions like temperature and humidity across the supply chain.

As the company grew through acquisitions, it inherited multiple legacy remote monitoring apps. Each one had its own workflows, features, and way of handling similar monitoring and compliance needs.

Warehouses & Logistics

Teams track environmental conditions across facilities.

Challenges

The app had become a mix of old tools, repeated workflows, and manual work.

Too many legacy pieces in one product ecosystem

SmartSense had acquired IoT products that solved similar problems in different ways.
Important features lived across different legacy apps and experiences.
The team had to decide what to merge, improve, rebuild, or retire.

Field teams had to work too hard to complete simple tasks

Routine compliance tasks took more steps than they should.
Users had to search for what needed attention instead of seeing it clearly.
Priorities, reminders, and completion status were not easy enough to act on.

Quality checks weren’t standardized or easy to trust

Temperature readings still had to be entered manually in some workflows.
If something was missing or out of range, the app didn’t clearly flag it.
Users had to rely on memory, manual review, or follow-up to catch issues.

project Goal

Consolidate legacy features into a modern remote monitoring app.

The goal was to modernize the existing app while merging key features from other legacy IoT products SmartSense had acquired.

That meant improving the technology, redesigning the UX/UI, and making daily monitoring work easier for field teams.

Our Approach

We mapped what needed to stay, change, and move into the new app.

01

Audited the product ecosystem

We started by understanding the existing app, the legacy tools around it, and the features that needed to be merged into one experience. The work focused on what users actually needed, what duplicated functionality existed, and which workflows had to be rebuilt or improved.

02

Redesigned workflows for field operations

The app had to work for teams using it in supermarkets, pharmacies, warehouses, and logistics environments. We simplified daily task execution with clearer priorities, yes/no actions, reminders, deadlines, and structured checklists that made routine work easier to complete.

03

Automated critical data capture

We integrated sensor data into the workflow so teams no longer had to rely as heavily on manual temperature entry. Automated readings reduced transcription errors and helped teams complete compliance tasks with more reliable data.

04

Built a modern version and shipped early

Instead of waiting on a long rebuild, we defined a core version of the modernized app and moved it into production quickly. The first release included the foundation for sensor integration, automated checklists, task prioritization, and a cleaner mobile experience.

05

Launched and evolved the platform

After launch, we kept improving the app based on how teams used it in real supermarket and pharmaceutical environments. Feedback helped shape collaboration features, issue tracking, and workflow improvements that reflected actual operational needs.

Impact

Less time on routine tasks. More confidence in compliance work.

60%

Faster task execution

Simpler workflows and better navigation helped teams complete daily routines faster.

50%

Process optimization

Manual and fragmented steps were replaced with more consistent workflows.

100%

Automated quality checks

Structured checklists, task status, reminders, and sensor data made quality work easier to track.

Testimonial

"Their level of talent and engagement with the product are outstanding. Listen to their team’s recommendations and follow the practices they have in place because they know what they’re doing.”
